Pandemic Pause
During the covid-19 pandemic there was a lot of suffering in Trancoso as the tourism economy suddenly halted from March 2020 for over 7-months, and only returned gradually thereafter.
If there is anything good Organic Festival organizers can take from the experience is the memory that our own hospitality industry in Trancoso acted with spontaneous urgency and courage to guarantee vulnerable members of our community remained fed.
The Alimente Trancoso (Feed Trancoso) initiative led by UXUA and other local hotels gathered their own food stocks and those from local restaurants, schools, and shops, as well as donations from homeowners of the area, and distributed care packages directly into the most in-need neighborhoods of Trancoso.
5500 food parcels were delivered to the doors of local families by a small team of brave volunteers willing to leave their homes in a time of quarantine and who earned themselves the nickname 'angels of the street'.
A total of 127 tons of food, 61.000 personal hygiene and cleaning items reached those most in need.
In times of crisis sustainable communities don't fracture, they unite.
